Description
Unruly Women of Antiquity

This special session is dedicated to female figures from Ancient Greece who transcended traditional norms. We will explore women who made their voices heard, left their mark, and assumed transformative roles within social, cultural, and political structures. Whether fictional or historical, their common ground is this: defiance.

The first part of the session will focus on historical figures, the second on mythological ones. Depending on time, the third part will highlight lesser-known but highly influential women.

  • Historical Figures
    • Artemisia – A female commander and strategist of Halicarnassus
    • Aspasia – An intellectual influential in Athenian political life
    • Hypatia – A woman of reason and science in Alexandria
    • Sappho – A poet who wrote through a female voice, expressing passion and emotion
    • Agnodike – The human form of Íkaros
  • Tragic Characters
    • Medea – A sorceress who challenged boundaries through wisdom and rage
    • Hecuba – A queen who stood tall even in the collapse of power
  • Comic Characters
